NBCNEWS  Campaign to Recognize Garbage Man Appreciation Day

SILVER SPRING, MD  — The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), John H. Skinner, Ph.D. BCEEM, announces its support of the national campaign to recognize Garbage Man Appreciation Day on June 17, 2013. Garbage Man Appreciation Day was initiated by John D. Arwood, president of Arwood Waste Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida, to highlight the importance of waste management professionals and offer recognition for these hard working men and women.

“SWANA is joining the effort and is featuring a campaign to help celebrate garbage truck collectors and drivers, recycling workers, landfill operators and attendants, sanitation workers, and the other men and women who perform the jobs that help keep our communities clean and safe,” stated John H. Skinner, Ph.D. SWANA Executive Director and CEO.

SWANA’s campaign highlights ideas that teachers, families and local communities can implement to show their support in commemorating this day, including custom downloadable coloring pages for kids. Skinner added, “At SWANA, we want to embrace every opportunity to advance public awareness about the important work performed by solid waste professionals in our communities week after week. Through this campaign, everyone can do something small to make a big impact on someone’s day by acknowledging the work they do.”
